People love to eat non vegetarian food in weekends. Sometimes they don’t find time to prepare non vegetarian food. In such times most of the women prefer Khatti Dal. Khatti Dal is a famous south Indian recipe, popular in Hyderabad. Khatti in Hindi means Sour; this taste comes from usage of tamarind. This Khatti Dal looks like water, but it tastes good. Even though Khatti dal is popular recipe of south Asia, its value is known by all people. Khatti Dal is good in summer for people who have digestion problems.
Ingredients:
Oil 1 tsp
Toor Dal 2 cups
Onions 2
Ginger paste 1/4 tsp
Garlic paste 1/4 tsp
Red chili powder 2 tsp
Tamarind (not paste, 6-8 pieces)
Tomato 1
Turmeric 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds (Jeera) 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 cup
Curry leaves few
Coriander leaves for garnish 1 or 2
Salt to taste

Khatti Dal can be served along with any other pickle. Hyderabad people prefer mango pickles or tomato pickles. Roti and Khatti Dal combination is good to eat. With roti you can scoop the Dal along with vegetables and eat.
Preparation:
Take a bowl of toor dal and wash it with water.
Remove the washed toor dal into fresh plate.
Cut onions and tomato and put them aside.
Main Cooking:
Wash toor dal and boil it for some time (20 minutes), check whether it became soft or not.
Now take a Kadai (round vessel/pan used for cooking) pour some oil in it, heat it for some time.
Add few curry leaves, jeera seeds and mustard seeds in that oil. Fry the combination for one minute.
Add onion pieces to that combination and fry till onion turns golden brown.
Try to keep the flame low and fry those onions. Don’t allow onions to get black. If they get black taste of the dal becomes bitter.
Add the tamarind pieces but not paste to the fried onion mixture. Now add few tomatoes (diced or paste) to them. Cook them and wait for oil to separate.
Add toor dal and enough water to the combination.
Add salt to taste, as required. Garnish it with coriander leaves.
Once the total thing, gets into proper shape remove it from the stove.
Serve it to the people, along with roti or any pickle.
Presentation:
Present toor dal in a separate bowl. See that bowl has enough space to put the hand. You can use a plate, put some rice in it and spread a layer of Khatti dal. Serve roti on a plate and Khatti dal in a bowl.
