Preparing Jams and Jellies


Jams and jellies are made from fruits. Jams are prepared after crushing the fruits where as jellies are made out of fruit juices and jellies won't contain any pieces of fruits in it. The preservations of both jams and jellies are extremely important as both would stay good for long.

One of the critical aspects to be considered when preparing jams and jellies is regarding the addition of sugar. Many of the first attempt preparations of jams and jellies end up in a syrup preparation, just because of the confusions in adding right amount of sugar. Jam and jelly preparations require good amount of sugar which will attribute to the firmness of jams. What makes jams and jellies so thicken is the presence of a carbohydrate in them. The combination of this carbohydrate (pectin) with the sugar is what it yields to a good jam or a good jelly. As a matter of fact, good quantities of sugar than one anticipate in normal cases should be added to get the desired result.

It has to be specially mentioned that, when buying jams and jellies, special care has to be given on selecting the jams and jellies that are made from home. This is just because homemade jams and jellies always prove to be much tastier and affordable to have when compared to store made or company made jams and jellies.
